Cookie policy
Updated
As of , this site sets no cookies: none of its own, none from a third party, none technical, none analytical and none for advertising. That is why you see no consent banner. The cookie table on this page is empty because there is nothing to list.
1. What a cookie is, and what counts as the same thing
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device when you visit it and can read again on later visits. It has legitimate uses, such as remembering a preference or keeping you signed in, and it can also be used to follow you from page to page and from site to site.
The name of the file matters little. This page uses the word "cookie" in the broad sense, covering cookies proper as well as local storage and session storage in the browser, web beacons, tracking pixels, device identifiers and browser fingerprinting techniques. Anything that stores information on your device or reads information from it belongs here.
2. What cookies this site uses today: none
This site:
- Sets no cookies of its own.
- Sets no third-party cookies, because it loads no third-party resource: no external fonts, no outside content delivery network, no remote script, no images hosted elsewhere, no video, no maps and no embedded content of any kind.
- Uses no tracking pixels and no advertising beacons.
- Uses no browser fingerprinting and no device identifiers.
- Has no user sessions, because there is no registration and no private area.
- Has no forms, and therefore no form protection cookies either.
You can check it in a minute: open your browser's developer tools, usually with the F12 key, and look at the storage or application tab. It should be empty. If it is not, that is a bug and I want to know about it: write to hello@rentguideline.com.
| Purpose | Name | Owner | Duration | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This table is empty on purpose: as of the site sets no cookies. It is published so that, if the site ever sets one, the cookie appears here with its purpose, its owner, its duration and its description. | ||||
3. Why there is no banner
Because there is nothing to consent to. A banner that appeared while no cookie was being set would protect nobody: it would only make you click. The site also has no analytics of any kind.
3.1. The tools store nothing in your browser either
You might expect a calculator to remember what you typed. These do not, and it is a claim you can check:
- They use no cookies, first-party or third-party.
- They use no local storage and no session storage.
- What you type lives only in the memory of the tab while it is open. Close it or reload the page and it is gone, and you have to type it again.
- No identifier is generated, for you or for your device, and nothing is left behind that could recognize you on a later visit.
That is why the check in section 2 works: the site's storage in your developer tools has to be empty even after you have used a tool.
4. If advertising is activated
The site intends to carry Google AdSense advertising in the future. None of what follows is active today; it describes how the cookie side would be handled, and the rest is in section A.4 of the privacy policy.
4.1. What advertising would store on your device
Google would act as an independent controller of what its own tags collect. Described generically, the cookies and identifiers an advertising network uses are these:
- Cookies that choose which ad to show and measure whether it was seen and whether it was clicked.
- Cookies that limit how often the same ad is shown to a browser.
- Cookies and identifiers used for fraud prevention and traffic quality.
- Where personalized advertising is served, cookies and identifiers used to build advertising interests and to measure conversions.
- A record of your consent choice, so that you are not asked again on every page.
The exact list would be published on this page before the first ad is shown, with the real name of each cookie, its owner, its duration and its purpose, in the table above.
4.2. Consent
A consent mechanism would appear before any advertising tag loads, and it would work like this:
- No advertising tag loads before you have decided, and no cookie is set while the panel is on screen.
- Refusing takes one click, and the refuse control is as visible and as accessible as the accept control.
- Nothing is preselected. Scrolling, closing the panel or carrying on reading is not consent.
- There is no cookie wall: if you refuse, the whole site keeps working, the tools included.
- Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it, from a permanent link that would appear on this page.
For visitors in Quebec, no technology that identifies, locates or profiles is activated before consent has been given for it, as set out in section A.4 of the privacy policy.
Before the first ad is shown, this page and the privacy policy are updated with each actual cookie, the identification of the consent mechanism, the list of advertising providers with a link to their own policies, and the date of the change.
5. How to control cookies in your browser
Whatever this site does, you can control cookies from your browser: block them all, block only third-party ones, clear them when you close the window, or delete the ones already stored. Blocking every cookie can stop other sites from working properly, since many of them do need cookies; this one is not affected either way.
Depending on the browser, the settings are in these places:
- Google Chrome
- Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies, and "Delete browsing data".
- Mozilla Firefox
- Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Enhanced Tracking Protection, and "Cookies and Site Data".
- Safari (Mac)
- Safari, then Settings, then Privacy, and "Manage Website Data".
- Safari (iPhone and iPad)
- Settings, then Apps, then Safari, then Privacy & Security.
- Microsoft Edge
- Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.
- Chrome on Android
- Menu, then Settings, then Site settings, then Third-party cookies.
Every browser also has a private or incognito window that clears a site's cookies and storage when you close it. The exact names of these menus change from one version to the next; if you cannot find the option, search for "cookies" in your browser's settings.
6. More information and contact
How personal information is handled, including the purposes, the recipients, the handling outside Canada and your rights, is described in the privacy policy. The identification of the operator is in the terms of use.
If you have a question about this policy, or you find that the site is setting a cookie that is not listed here, write to hello@rentguideline.com.
7. Changes to this policy
This policy is updated whenever the site's use of cookies changes, and in every case before the first cookie is set. The date of the last update is at the top of the page.
